2008-W US Silver Eagle Burnished Reverse of 2007 NGC MS70

2008-W US Silver Eagle Burnished Reverse of 2007 NGC MS70
Item# 3150

Product Description

2008-W American Silver Eagle containing 1 Troy oz of .999 fine silver, reverse of 2007 burnished uncirculated graded MS-70 (perfect).

Starting in 2006 the U.S. Mint issued a special collector's version of the American Silver Eagle that was minted using burnished dies and sold in special packaging and in certain Mint sets. They are not proof coins, but are sold as Uncirculated Silver Eagles. They are minted at West Point, so they carry the "W" mint mark, while the bullion Silver Eagles are minted at the Philadelphia Mint (no mint-mark).

None have been minted since 2008, and it is unknown if the burnished Silver Eagles will be revived in the future.

Mintages are much lower than for the bullion coins, in 2008 over 20 million Silver Eagle bullion coins were minted, but only 533,757 2008-W Silver Eagles.

This particular coin is from an even smaller subset, it has an error. The reverse dies for the 2007 coin were used to mint an estimated 47,000 coins, and these have attracted a lot of collector interest. This coin has been graded MS-70 by NGC, and has a retail value of over $750.
