The obverse of the Silver Dollar features Christopher Columbus standing with a flag in his right hand and a globe to his left. Ships and land can be seen rising in the background. The reverse of the coin features a split view of a fifteenth century sailing vessel and a twentieth century space shuttle.

On the Half Dollar the obverse features a view of Columbus stepping into the New World. In the background a row boat and the Santa Maria ship can be seen. The reverse of the coin shows all three of Columbus' ships, the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria.
