1902 British 5 Sovereign Edward VII AU58
Product Description
1902 Inauguration £5 Pound (Five Sovereign) Edward VII, NGC graded AU58.
The first 5 pound gold coin (quintuple sovereign) was struck in 1820 although only a few of that mintage were made and they were only a "pattern" coin, not for circulation. It was issued again in small numbers in 1826, 1829 and 1839.
In 1887, it was struck for the first time for circulation, and it was struck also in 1893 and 1902, though few actually circulated with most being melted down. For the 1902 (struck to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII) about 27,000 have been melted down with an estimated 8,066 remaining.
Accordingly these are rare (as £5 was a lot of money then, equivalent to $1,060 today) and highly sought after.
