Sigma Metalytics introduced the the Precious Metal Verifier Original in 2013 and it quickly became the "must have" tool for coin shops around the world. It was the first practical device that could check gold, silver, palladium and platinum coins and bars non-destructively and without spending tens of thousands for XRF machines (which start at $15,000). This model can also test copper and rhodium.
Since the Original came out a couple different models have been released- the Pro in 2017 and the newest is the Investor in 2023.
They are almost foolproof although verifying metals requires a two part test. Some fakes will pass the electronic resistivity test (the display shows in the green "good" zone) but fail the SG test. The Investor model makes checking both at the same time easy and intuitive, almost the same features as the Pro but much cheaper.
