The American Gold Eagle series of coins are the most popular gold bullion coin sold in the US. These $10 Gold Eagles contain 1/4 troy oz of Gold in a 22 karat composition (91.67% Gold, 3% Silver and 5.33% Copper) and each coin weighs 0.2727 troy oz total.

Struck by the US Mint at West Point, the American Gold Eagle's weight and composition are guaranteed by the US Government as they are legal tender coins, so Eagles are a very safe way of buying gold. The popularity and implied guarantee of legal tender do cause the American Gold Eagle to be priced higher than other gold bullion coins.
