1999 U.S. Mint Washington $5 Proof PR-69 Ultra Cameo
1999-W George Washington Gold Commemorative $5 Half Eagle coin containing 0.2419 Troy oz of .900 fine gold, graded Proof 69 Ultra Cameo by NGC.
This coin was issued for the 200th anniversary of the death of George Washington. The design was originally created by Laura Garden Fraser for the 1932 Washington Quarter but was passed over by Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon who selected a design by John Flanagan. Research suggests that the Treasury Secretary did not want a woman to design the new quarter.
The obverse portrait of George Washington is based on a bust by Jean Antoine Houdon, while the reverse features a perched eagle with thirteen stars above and inscriptions “United States of America”, “E Pluribus Unum”, and the denomination “Five Dollars”.
